Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to get started and make the most of HeyCommune.

Getting started

What is HeyCommune?

HeyCommune is an app for apartments and residential societies (colonies) in India. It helps residents and managing committees handle everyday community life in one place — maintenance billing and dues, a community feed, announcements, issues, funds and expenses, a neighbour marketplace, meetings, a resident directory and emergency contacts.

How do I sign up and log in?

Open the app and enter your mobile number. We send a one-time code (OTP) by SMS — enter it and you're in. There's no password. For faster access later, you can set a PIN or use your phone's fingerprint/face unlock.

How do I join my society?

After signing in, choose Join a society. You can search for it by name, or paste the invite code your committee shared — a link from them opens straight to it. Your request goes to the community admin for approval, after which you'll see your flat, bills and the community feed.

Nobody from my building is on HeyCommune yet. Can I set it up?

Yes. Choose Set up a new society, add a few basic details, and you become its first admin. From there you can add flats, invite neighbours, set maintenance rates and start billing. It takes about five minutes to get going.

What's the difference between an apartment and a colony/society?

An apartment community has individual flats, so it uses per-flat features like My Flat, occupancies and per-flat maintenance billing. A colony/society is for independent houses or layouts — it uses the community feed, funds, expenses, issues and the marketplace, and can also enable maintenance billing as a chargeable add-on. You pick the type when you create the community.

Bills, dues & funds

How do I pay my maintenance bill?

Open My Bill from the home screen to see your amount, due date and what's been paid. Pay your society the usual way, then mark it as paid in the app — it goes to your committee to confirm, and they record it against your flat. (Direct in-app online payment is coming soon.)

I don't see any bill yet — why?

Your first bill appears once your committee has set up the maintenance rates and closed a billing month for your flat. If billing was only just switched on, you'll see a note that dues will appear here once the admin finishes setup. If you believe a bill is missing, check with your society's treasurer.

How does an admin raise maintenance bills?

In the admin dashboard, go to Billing config to set your rates and split method once. Each month you enter any meter readings, review the month in the billing cycle, and close it — which raises every flat's bill. Residents are then notified and can view and settle their dues.

How do funds and contributions work?

Communities can keep one or more funds (for example a maintenance fund or a one-off collection) and track their balances, contributions and expenses. Admins and treasurers manage funds; a fund can also have a delegated fund manager for a specific drive. Owners can view their community's fund balances.

Community, plans & support

What are the different roles?

Residents can be an owner, co-owner, tenant or family member of a flat. The committee has admin and treasurer roles, which unlock management tools like billing, funds, member approvals and settings. You only see what applies to your role.

What is the marketplace?

A neighbour-to-neighbour space to sell, rent, give away or ask for items within your society. When you post, you choose how people reach you: an in-app enquiry (your number stays private), phone, or WhatsApp. Transactions happen directly between neighbours — HeyCommune isn't a party to them.

How do emergency contacts and SOS work?

Your community's key numbers — gate, plumber, electrician, helplines — are one tap away on the home screen. The SOS option lets you quickly alert the community in an urgent situation. These are convenience features; in a real emergency always call your local emergency services first.

Is HeyCommune free?

HeyCommune is free for residents to use, and the community features are free. The maintenance & money suite (billing, dues & collections, funds & reports) is a paid plan — ₹20 per flat each month for apartments. Larger societies can email support@heycommune.com for volume discounts, and colonies that want billing can reach out to set it up. Any maintenance dues you pay are real money owed to your community — HeyCommune only helps collect and record them.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your information is protected and only shared within your community according to your settings. Payments are processed by a secure third-party gateway — we never store your card details. Read the full Privacy Policy for exactly what we collect and why.
